Marriage commissioner Jacqueline Hoare describes herself as a “life celebrant” because she has the honour of playing a pivotal role in celebrating life with her clients. She has been doing civil marriage ceremonies since being appointed a marriage commissioner in the province of Alberta in 2007. Hoare’s expertise at weaving a love story into a ceremony is reflected in the fact that her clients often call her back to preside over events such as baby-naming ceremonies, and even funerals. “It’s important that I find out, authentically, who [the couple] are and what they want as part of their ceremony,” says Hoare. “By finding that out, it then allows me to ‘create a ceremony with heart.’” —T.A.
