The newest addition to Telus Spark aims to immerse audiences in the world of science and art.

Housed in a 6,000 square-foot space in the science centre, Telus Spark’s new Digital Immersion Gallery uses digital projection, visuals and narration to take guests on a storytelling journey. Participants walk through the exhibit’s several rooms in groups of 20 and with a timer while the story unfolds. The timer lets participants know when to move on to the next room until the story comes to an end.

Telus Spark worked with Supply and Demand Studio Inc., which was started by former Cirque du Soleil multimedia director Oliver Goulet, to create the gallery.

Mary Anne Moser, president and CEO of Telus Spark, hopes the gallery can engage with people emotionally through stories about science, math and engineering, while also appealing to multiple senses. The immersion gallery allows the science centre to “find new ways to tell stories that appeal to wider audiences, [but] not just for science fans,” she says.

Moser says Telus Spark will be always be pushing what the platform is capable of through visuals, concepts and ideas. “We are going to every six months, take people to a place that you physically cannot otherwise go, whether it’s a conceptual space, the human brain, it’s a world of ideas,” she says.

The first exhibit in the gallery is Every Second, which offers a journey through life’s moments, added up and examined through the lens of how much time we spend standing, eating, sleeping, walking and more.

Every Second runs until January 30, 2022 and then a new exhibit will launch in February. Tickets for this experience are included in Telus Spark’s admission fee, though the science centre suggests pre-booking a 30-minute time slot to guarantee a spot in the immersion gallery at the time of your visit.
