You know Calgary’s next superstar filmmaker when you see one. You can spot an upcoming Steven Spielberg. Or Egoyan. Or Scorsese. But you also know how hard your friends work to follow their filmmaking dreams. The long days. The financial cost. The struggle to coordinate everything, from actors to permits to camera crews.
Then show your support for their dedication with a couple of clicks. Maybe, just maybe they’ll get the break they need.
Starting Nov. 10 through Dec. 1, you can vote for your favourite locally made web pilot TV shows at STORYHIVE.com. Just sign up at STORYHIVE.com by using your email address, or log in via Twitter or Facebook. (It takes less than 60 seconds to sign in and vote.)
The community-powered film funding program was created by TELUS to support Alberta’s burgeoning film industry. Earlier this fall, more than 50 Albertans entered multimedia applications at STORYHIVE.com in hopes of winning cash to produce their original web pilot television shows.
Voting is free, and you’ll also have the opportunity to watch each entry. And encourage your friends, family, co-workers and social media contacts to sign up and vote, too.
In December, Alberta’s Top 15 projects will be announced at STORYHIVE.com. Each of the Alberta winners will receive a $10,000 production grant, as well as mentorship and the opportunity to make a pilot webisode, three to eight minutes in length. Those web pilots will be shown on Optik Local (TELUS community programming) via TELUS Optik TV on Demand and other online venues.
Then, in Spring 2015, stage 2 of the competition will begin. The 15 Alberta finalists will all compete against 15 competitors from British Columbia. From that group of 30 filmmakers, one competitor will win $50,000, plus training and mentorship to turn their idea into a complete web series.
To be eligible to enter in Alberta, each competitor had to be at least 18 years old at the time of registration, as well as live within a TELUS Optik Local Calgary or Edmonton territory. Here in Calgary, that area includes Calgary (you probably guessed that), plus the surrounding communities of Airdrie, Canmore, Chestermere Lake, Cochrane, Didsbury, Harvie Heights and Okotoks.
