5 New Locally Brewed Beers to Try

Branch out from your hum-drum mass-market beer and try one of these craft beers for a more refined experience.

If there was ever a season perfect for beer, it is the summer. With more and more micro-breweries opening up each month, Calgarians have never been luckier when it comes to quality, boozy refreshments. Here are five newer beers to the Calgary market that are readily available around town.

Banded Peak The Plainsbreaker (Pale Ale)

Calgary’s newest brewery is slowly making its way into (and flowing out of) taps across the city with its three premiere creations. The Plainsbreaker, which is technically a pale ale, drinks somewhere in-between that and a wheat ale with a lots of tropical fruit notes and aromatics. Best enjoyed on a patio, like at one of the National beerhalls, which carries it. The forecast looks somewhat promising this week. Or visit the local microbrewery and do some sampling in the tap room. Open Thursday to Sunday.

Half Hitch Brewing Shotgun Wedding (Brown Ale)

Located in Cochrane and several years in the building, Half Hitch is the first brewery for the town, as well as the newest addition to province’s craft brewing scene. If only initially for the illustration on this particular label (let’s think about why shotgun weddings happen…), pick up one of these microbrews to find smooth flavours of chocolate and caramel. They’re available at the brewery or you can find them at Willow Park Wines & Spirits.

Last Best Brewery Berlinner Weisse

With a big brewing set-up in the lower level of its popular 11th Avenue S.W. brewpub, the folks at Last Best are always coming up with new beers to send up the draught lines to their thirsty patrons. Added to the rotation a couple of weeks ago is the sour German wheat beer that has the upfront intensity of a textbook sour, but mellows out in the finish due to the addition of mango and passionfruit juice. Head brewer Phil Brian says that this particular beer is a great beginner beer for people who want to ease their palates into sour beers.

Trolley 5 and Dandy Brewing Co. The Dandy Prince Of The (Rodeo Session Sour)

The name is definitely a mouthful, but don’t let that scare you away from this limited edition beer at Trolley 5, which was created in collaboration with quality local brewer, Dandy Brewing Co. This brew packs a seriously puckering punch and definitely lives up to its sour name. It may not be for beer novices, but more well-versed beer fans will find it memorable.

Village Brewery Squeeze Helles Lager

For a light, summery sipper, look no further than Village’s new beer. With fresh notes of lemon, raspberry and just a touch of hops, a swig of this can taste remarkably bright even when the weather outside is not.
