Watch events like the hammer throw at the Canmore Highland Games

Since 1991, the Canmore Highland Games have brought Scottish traditions to the Canadian Rockies. This year’s event kicks off on Friday with Taste of the Highlands, featuring gourmet appetizers and dozens of vendors offering samples of scotches, wines and beer. Saturday and Sunday are when games like the caber toss, hammer throw and Braemar stone (an event similar to shot put) take place. In between the heavy events, catch sheepdog demonstrations, pipe band competitions, step dancing and more.

Festival delle Sagre, or “Festival of Festivals,” is an annual open-air food festival held every September in Asti, Italy. The Fat Ox in Banff brings this tradition to its own restaurant as part of its Long Table Dinner Series, this time with a special focus on traditional Italian cuisine. The menu for the evening features beer tartare, roasted carrot risotto and Alberta short rib served with gorgonzola polenta. Eat this feast at the same table with strangers and leave with a full belly and a feeling of connection.
