Celebrate with Calgary Pride

This year’s Calgary Pride features a week full of events, with many of them falling over the long weekend. Check out events like Pride on the Island on Saturday with special guest DJ Trixie Mattel, the Black Pride Festival on Sunday and of course, the annual Pride parade, also on Sunday. Don your rainbow clothes and enjoy the festivities.

Experience a Golden Globe-winning film with a live orchestra

When: September 4 and 5

The Dreamworks animated film How to Train Your Dragon 2 comes to the Jubilee Auditorium this weekend, accompanied by the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Hear the sweeping score played live with you watch the film in HD on the big screen.

Grab a bite at the new Native Tongues Taqueria location in Bridgeland

Native Tongues Taqueria, which already operated three fantastic restaurants around Calgary, just opened a new location in Bridgeland at the end of August. Head there to check out the new space and for all your favourite dishes. Have fun at a festival about Filipino culture

When: September 4 to 7

This long weekend, celebrate with Fiesta Filipino, the annual festival that has been celebrating Filipino culture in Calgary for the past 12 years. Eat and shop from more than 15 vendors and food trucks, check out more than 25 exhibitors, and dance and sing along to a whopping 280+ local and international performers. Some standout acts from this year’s festival include America’s Got Talent season 20 winner Jessica Sanchez, Myka and Jeric from Manila’s professional dance company G-Force and Jason Zamora of Filipino dance group Manoeuvres.

Tour Calgary’s public art installations on a bike

When: September 5

Hop on your bike and gather downtown for a cycling tour of Calgary’s public art, hosted by curator Tyson Bankert of Recess Calgary and Calgary Arts Development. This tour takes you on an 8-kilometre journey past Calgary’s playful public art pieces as your guide tells you details and fun facts about the pieces with a voice amplifier.

Play music with the whole family

When: September 5 and 6

Studio Bell’s PlayLab invites the whole family for free musical fun this weekend with its Family Music Celebration. Take part in interactive music experiences and performances featuring local acts like Jory Kinjo and The Crickettes, try a family rhythm jam sesh or create a soundscape with the kids. Have your kids experience the joy of creating music while you get to feel like a kid again.

Try a new Korean barbecue spot

Mapo Galbee, a new restaurant in the southwest, held its soft opening last month. The menu is filled with Korean barbecue staples including pork galbi (ribs), beef galbi and pork belly, all grilled right there at the table. It’s a great spot to go eat with friends and family, offering both an experience and a great meal.

Party at a festival celebrating African and Caribbean culture

When: September 5 and 6

This year marks the second edition of the Afro Caribbean Festival, inviting all of Calgary to participate in the rich cultures and traditions of Africa and the Caribbean. Check out events like a fashion show, parade, cultural performances, live music and arts and crafts.

Cheer on the Stampeders at the Labour Day Classic

Did you know that the Calgary Stampeders and Edmonton Elks have competed against each other every Labour Day since 1982? Cheer on our home team this long weekend as we face off once again in this historic rivalry.

Get a sneak peak of the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ event

When: September 7

While there may not be any showjumping on Labour Day, Spruce Meadows will still be abuzz with live performances, exhibitions and shopping opportunities at this preview event. Head to the Deloitte Ring to see the beloved Dachshund Dash races and the hobby horse race. Bring family and friends along for the fun, because groups of four or more save 20 per cent on entry.
