When Ken and Kathy Sissons made the move from Elbow Valley to an inner-city attached home three years ago, they wanted to take some of the natural, organic feel of the countryside with them. The Sissons own Domaine Fine Furnishings, so they weren’t lacking for the latest in home furnishings and decor. The obvious choice to help them realize their vision was their daughter, interior designer and Domaine’s director of design, Emily Sissons.
The 1990s-era home, complete with blue carpets and melamine cupboards, was gutted and built back up. Emily designed a clean, transitional and approachable space that incorporated earthy and organic elements, including resin light fixtures, granite countertops and hammered metal door handles. The home feels both cozy and elegant, particularly in Ken and Kathy’s favourite room, the open-concept kitchen and living area.
Ken and Kathy Sissons share three features they love about this room.
Dining table
“One of the things that I love about this space is this dining table. It’s by the Altura line and it’s done in burnished ash, which gives it a lovely texture. You can seat six people or add the self-storing 24-inch leaf and comfortably seat 12 people for dinner. It’s really a showcase in here for the lines we carry. The space is fantastic for that.” -Ken Sissons
Countertops
“I also really love the granite because there’s crystal in the granite and every now and then you get a play of light on it and you can see the coppery crystal embedded in it. It was all custom-made for the space.” -Kathy Sissons
Sofa
“This sofa by Hickory Chair has got that beautiful shaping along the back that allows for an easy entry into the room. Typically contemporary would be more of a box shape, but it has that curved, transitional movement.” -Ken Sissons
