How to Shop a Sale Like a Pro

Some of the year’s biggest sales are in full swing. Calgary-based fashion expert, Leah Van Loon, shares her tips for getting the most bang for your buck.

January is one of the best times to find a bargain, and the stores are in major sale mode right now. While new resort and spring merchandise are currently filling the shelves, work your way to the back of the store for the real deals. Here’s how to get the most out of your sale shopping.

Hurry

If you have been able to resist getting a new winter coat or boots this long, then the time is now! Winter merchandise is on sale and you will find the best deals in January for outerwear and winter accessories. In fact, if you haven’t gotten those new gloves, winter socks, or tights, then get on it. They will be replaced by swimwear before you know it.

Buy Now, Wear Later

Although it feels like a long way off, I promise you that spring is coming. Think about what items you can buy now on sale to wear when the weather lightens up. Non-seasonal fabrics like a light wool jacket or a great denim are the kind of thing you can wear year round whether you layer it with your big turtleneck and down vest right now or with a T-shirt in high summer. Try to find fabrics that aren’t too heavy or wooly and you can work them into your wardrobe for the next six months.

Try Before You Buy

Whatever you do, make sure you try it on. Not only is it a hassle to return anything, but many times sales items are non-refundable. Make sure it fits before you commit (seriously, just do it). Wear separates so if you are trying something on you don’t have to bring in another item that may not fit you.

Let’s Make a Deal

Sometimes you come across an amazing deal that you just can’t pass up. STOP! Ask yourself if you need this or even want it. If you didn’t want it at full price, why do you want it now? Whether you are spending $5 or $500 you have to make sure it’s something that will work for you. A deal isn’t a deal if it’s just taking up valuable closet space.

Take Your Time

Try not to rush your way through your sale shopping. Sometimes you really need to dig to find gold. Give yourself some time and hit the shops before the crowds. If you need to go outside of office hours, do it later in the evening or go before noon on a weekend. Stay positive and if you don’t find anything, that’s ok. There will be another sale soon.
