8 Calgary Pub Trivia Nights to Test Your Brain

Put your knowledge to the test at these pub trivia nights and get a deal on food and drinks while you do it.

If you like a good brain teaser or have an encyclopedic knowledge of random facts, then you may find yourself right at home at one of the many trivia nights that take place almost every day of the week at various pubs in the city. Testing your knowledge on everything from pop culture to music, almost all the events are free and offer up awesome prizes. To prevent you from getting puzzled, here’s a list of eight different trivia nights held in Calgary.

Mondays

Molly Malone’s

When: Every Monday from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.

What: At Molly Malone’s, there are five rounds with 10 trivia questions each. Each round is a different batch of general knowledge questions, ranging in top from science to history to pop culture. You can also win bonus points for things like getting to know your neighbour or best team name, depending on the week. There are prizes for the top three teams.

Food/drink specials: Baked potatoes (toppings are extra) and poutine are $5 each. Draft pints of Canadian, Coors Banquet and Coors Light are $5.25 each.

The Unicorn Pub

When: Mondays at 6:30 p.m.

What: Pub Stumpers hosts a trivia night at The Unicorn (recently relocated to where The Libertine was) every week. This is a trivia league (though anyone can join in) and the questions are basic trivia knowledge.

Food/drink specials: Happy hour is from 4 to 7 p.m., so you’re just in time to get 10 percent off draft beer, high balls and house red and white wines. There’s also a burger and beer special for $12 and sleeves of Steam Whistle are $4 all day.

Swans of Inglewood

When: Mondays starting at 7:30 p.m.

What: Team up with a maximum of five people for 10 rounds of trivia featuring three questions each round. The questions cover a range of topics including music, literature, history and more. You have to get first place to win a prize.

Tuesdays

Broken City

When: Tuesdays starting at 7 p.m.

What: Called The Quiz Shoe, trivia nights at Broken City involve six rounds of seven questions, plus a picture round where you have to identify a selection of photos. Throughout the rounds, fun games like name that tune, spinning a wheel, drawing competitions and more can earn you extra points or prizes. Topics can range from pop culture to music to Canadian culture. Cost is $4 per player, with a maximum of eight people per team. First and second place winners get their bar tab covered for the next week.

Food/drink specials: A pound of chicken wings is $5 and PBR pitchers are $15.25.

The Cat ‘N Fiddle Pub

When: Tuesdays at 7 p.m.

What: Cat ‘N Fiddle Pub holds two trivia nights every week. On Tuesday nights, you’ll be asked general trivia questions over four rounds of 20 questions. The first place winner gets $25 off their bill, plus there’s a random prize that anyone can win.

Food/drink specials: Ribs are $3.95 a pound and pints of Grizzly Paw, Original 16 and Shock Top are $5.75 each.

Wednesdays

Mugs Pub

When: Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m.

What: At Mugs Pub, there are four rounds of around 20 trivia questions. The questions cover a range of general trivia topics, and the winner gets a $30 bar tab. There’s also a random prize that anyone can win.

Food/drink specials: All appetizers are $5 each and pints of Big Rock are $5.

Thursdays

The Cat ‘N Fiddle Pub

When: Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.

What: The second of Cat ‘N Fiddle’s two trivia nights, this one focuses on pop culture and music trivia and goes for five rounds. The format is also a bit different: a team is asked a question, and if they get it right, they get a point. If they get it wrong, the next team gets to answer the question and steal the point. You can get bonus points for random, fun activities in between questions. First place gets $25 off their bar table, plus there’s swag for people who can answer random questions.

Food/drink specials: You can get three tacos for $5.25, pints of Big Rock for $5.75, Crown Royal for $5.75, half price bottles of wine and $1.50 off Don Julio and Patron Tequilas.

Saturdays

Dickens Pub

When: This is a monthly Saturday night event that starts at 5 p.m.

What: The event is called Classic Simpsons Trivia, and features five rounds of 10 questions each that focus on the first 11 seasons of The Simpsons. The pub also screens three episodes of the show during the event. Scoop up prizes for the best themed name, highest score, best impression of the Simpsons character of the month and other games.

Food/drink specials: $1 mini burgers, plus there’s a doughnut flavoured beer created by Big Rock Brewery especially for the event.
