Advertiser FAQ: Best of the Mountains Ballot 2024

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Avenue’s 2023 Best of the Mountains ballot.

From September 18 to November 3, 2024 Avenue is running our second Best of the Mountains Ballot, seeking feedback from our readers on the best destinations, things to do, places to eat and spots to stay in Calgary’s mountain playground.

Avenue’s ballots receive high engagement from our readers. In its first year, our Best Restaurants ballot had engagement from more than 13,000 readers. Our Best Weddings Services ballot, which is a far more niche subject, received more than 14,000 nominations and votes from more than 8,000 readers. Last year, our first-ever Best of the Mountains ballot received more than 6,000 votes.

Our readers love the mountains — in our most recent reader survey, 65% reported visiting the mountains regularly.

This year, from September 25 to October 9, our readers can nominate their favourite mountain businesses in a variety of categories. The nominations are then fact checked and shortlisted based on popularity and move onto the voting period, which runs from from October 23 to November 6, the end of which coincides with our highest traffic time period around the launch of our Top 40 Under 40 coverage.

To increase your exposure and help encourage votes for your business, we’ve developed several advertising opportunities that will run adjacent to these engaging, audience-driven programs in late November, with stories developed about the winners over the coming year as well.

Does a business have to advertise in the magazine to advance to voting or be chosen as a winner?

No. No purchase is required to participate in the competition or to win the competition. Our goal is to engage our audience and community partners for input on the best of the mountains near Calgary.

For interested businesses, we are not shy in telling you that advertising with Avenue is the best way to remind the voters about your business and ask for their votes.

Also, building this competition and developing the content and promotion around it, takes a lot of time and money. We wouldn’t be able to do it without our advertisers.

How does the nomination/voting work?

Readers submit the names of their favourite places in each category during our nomination period. Our editorial team reviews the nominations and fact checks them to ensure the names and categories are correct, and then the businesses with the top nominations are selected to compete for the title of Best of the Mountains during our voting period. If you want your business considered, we encourage you to nominate yourself during the nomination round. The more nominations a business receives, the more likely you will be among the top nominated businesses moving onto our voting round.

What are enhanced listings and why would I want one?

Enhanced listings allow you to add an image, video and/or more text to your business listing to help you stand out from the other businesses and provide additional information about your business to our readers. It also creates a dedicated URL that you can share.

Why can’t you give the enhanced listings away?

The price of enhanced listings helps us cover the costs of doing this competition, including the production work to put that enhanced listing online.
