Advertiser FAQ: Best Restaurants Ballot

Answers to the most frequently asked questions about Avenue’s 2022 Best Restaurants ballot.

In 2020, we were working on our 2021 Best Restaurants in Calgary list and wanted to find a way to engage our audience in the process. We created a Best Restaurants Ballot to collect submissions and votes from diners across the city in multiple categories. More than 13,000 people participated multiple times throughout the project. Because of the enthusiasm for dining in Calgary, and in particular the enthusiasm from Avenue‘s audience, we anticipate engagement will be even higher this year.

The platform we are using allows us to develop advertising opportunities to help leverage that engagement. We’ve answered some of the most frequently asked questions about advertising in the ballot here.

Does a business have to advertise in the magazine to advance to voting or be chosen as a winner?

No. No purchase is required to participate in the competition or to win the competition. Our goal is to engage our audience and community partners for input on the best restaurants in Calgary.

For interested businesses, we are not shy in telling you that advertising with Avenue is the best way to remind the voters about your business and ask for their votes.

Also, building this competition and developing the content and promotion around it, takes a lot of time and money. We wouldn’t be able to do it without our advertisers.

How does the nomination/voting work?

Readers submit the names of their favourite restaurants in each category during our nomination period. Our editorial team reviews the nominations and fact checks them to ensure the names and categories are correct, and then the businesses with the top nominations are selected to compete for the title of Best Restaurant in Calgary during our voting period. If you are a restaurant owner and want your business considered, we encourage you to nominate yourself during the nomination round. The more nominations a business receives, the more likely you will be among the top nominated businesses moving onto our voting round.

What do I do if I want to advertise?

We are offering advertising opportunities during our voting round, which runs September 27 to October 18. Please fill out this form and we will get back to you with more information on advertising within the ballot, on AvenueCalgary.com and in our print magazine.

What are enhanced listings and why would I want one?

Enhanced listings allow you to add an image and/or more text to your business listing to help you stand out from the other businesses and provide additional information about your business to our readers. It also creates a dedicated URL that you can share. You can see an example and what it looks like compared to other listings here.

Why can’t you give the enhanced listings away?

The price of enhanced listings helps us cover the costs of doing this competition, including the production work to put that enhanced listing online.
