The location
Before Bridgeland developed into the bustling community it is today, the area started out as two separate communities: Bridgeland and Riverside. Both communities were located on the north side of the Bow River. Riverside, informally known as Germantown as German immigrants from Russia settled there, was incorporated as a village in 1903. Between 1900 and 1914, as more Ukrainian and Italian immigrants moved to the area, it became known as Little Italy instead. Bridgeland, meanwhile, was developed by CPR for working-class residents. In 1907, Riverside was annexed, and in 1908, the Bridgeland-Riverside community association was founded, forming the foundation for the vibrant Bridgeland neighbourhood we know today.
