10 Best Cafes to Set Up Office

Calgary’s cafs are way trendier than either your basement or your office, and twice as likely to have pastries. Why work in a stale environment when you can plod away at your novel in one of these Wi-Fi- and work-friendly hotspots?

Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters in Marda Loop.

Analog Caf

Though this small, chic space is often packed, the Fratello-brand coffee and hip, record-laden interior mean your seat is worth fighting for. Electrical outlets are mostly in the front, with the back reserved for coffee fiends.

Daily, 6:30 a.m. to midnight.

740 17 Ave. S.W., 403-265-2112, fratellocoffee.com/analog-cafe

Bell’s Bookstore and Caf

This tiny local caf has the book-lined walls and rustic decor to give you a cozier vibe, but your plug-in options are limited to two outlets in the back or one in the ceiling in front.

Mon. to Fri., 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sat, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Sun, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

1515 34 Ave. S.W., 403-243-3095

Cadence Coffee

The checkered floors here see a lot of traffic on weekends, but the ability to switch between sofas, chairs and stools has a rejuvenating effect when you’ve been sitting all day. There are two pairs of outlets on either side of the caf and one behind the counter staff will let you use if you ask nicely.

Mon. to Fri., 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sat to Sun, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

6407 Bowness Rd. N.W., 403-247-9955, cadencecoffee.com

Caffe Rosso in Ramsay

Rosso has a colourful patio area, comfortable seats and sofas inside and great drip coffee. The downside is only two pairs of outlets, but it is more than made up for by being quieter than many other spots, in part because of its location in residential Ramsay. The other two locations of this local chain, in Victoria Park and on Stephen Ave., serve the same great coffee and treats, and are busier, an upside or a downside depending on your point of view.

Mon. to Fri., 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Sat to Sun, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

803 24 Ave. S.E., 403-971-1800, rossocoffeeroasters.com

deVille Luxury Coffee & Pastries

This tiny, trendy spot offers natural lighting and Nutella lattes. Plus, you can switch to wine when the typing gets tough. The one outlet, by the side of the couch, is a heavily contested area.

Mon. to Fri., 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sat and Sun, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

807 1 St. S.W. , 403-263-0884, devillecoffee.ca

Gravity Espresso & Wine Bar

The three supersized tables and the handful of outlet clusters with four plugs are great for group meetings or to spread out a bit, but Gravity is an open secret among meeting-makers, so keep in mind they’re often already in use.

Mon., 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tue. to Thu., 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., Fri., 7 a.m. to midnight, Sat., 8 a.m. to midnight, Sun., 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

909 10 St. S.E., 403-457-0697, cafegravity.com

Kawa Espresso Bar

The setting feels a bit more upscale than your local Starbucks, but, with plenty of tables and outlets, you shouldn’t feel bad for tackling your workload with a white mocha caffe here.

Mon. to Fri., 7 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sat, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sun, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters in Marda Loop

Usually busy, the long row of tables and vaulted ceiling give you space to breathe, but convenient outlets under the wall-mounted benches mean many who go here set up for the long haul.

Mon. to Fri., 6:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sat, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sun, 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Velvet Caf

The Salt Spring Island coffee here is gourmet but affordable, and the large storefront windows mean you won’t be dependent on your laptop for light during the day. The four outlets near the bar mean you can bunker down close to your caffeine supply.

502 25 Ave. N.W., 403-338-2087

Vendome Caf

Located near the LRT in Sunnyside, Vendome Caf’s menu has enough culinary variety to keep you working all day with four outlets to keep your laptop fed as well. Keep in mind that Thursday nights have live music, so may not be the best time for a client meeting.

Mon. to Fri., 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sat, 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., Sun, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

940 2 Ave. N.W., 403-453-1140, vendomecafe.com
