8 Great Places for Gluten-free Dining

More and more people are reducing or eliminating gluten from their diets, and restaurants are responding with dishes so flavourful you’ll order them even if you love gluten.

Raw Bar by Duncan Ly is just one of our city’s great restaurants where you can dine gluten-free and feel fulfilled.

Gluten-free dining isn’t what it used to be and for us, that’s a great thing. In the past couple of years, the number of gluten-free dining options has increased exponentially. Here are eight places that have gluten-free options.

Craft Beer Market

The gastropub giant may seem big and boisterous at times, but it’s definitely got a soft spot for its gluten-free guests, offering a long list of options for them including pasta, flatbreads and more. You will also find some gluten-free beers on tap.

Heaven Artisan GF

This Latin American-inspired eatery on 17th Avenue and 9th Street S.W. offers up an entirely gluten-free menu that features arepas, tacos, mac ‘n’ cheese and a whole lot more.

Monki Bistro

One of Calgary’s top brunch spots prides itself on providing dishes that everyone can enjoy. The eggs Benny options here automatically come on a gluten-free bun to help you get your morning off to a good start.

1301 10 Ave SW, 587-352-7131, @monkibistro

Pigeonhole

The city’s most talked-about new restaurant has a great mix of small plates on the menu, and aside from the bread that accompanies the lamb tartare, the blinis for the caviar service and the nori crumpets, it’s primarily gluten-free.

Raw Bar By Duncan Ly

Hotel Arts’ contemporary Vietnamese restaurant always does a fantastic job of accommodating diners with any dietary restrictions, especially wheat intolerances. Always start off with the imperial rolls – it’s a mistake if you don’t!

Suzette Bistro

You may not be able to enjoy the sweet crepes here, but the galettes, on the other hand, are savoury buckwheat-based crepes with a variety of fillings like goat cheese, spinach and fresh herbs or merguez sausage and potato. They are delicious.

2210 4 St SW, 403-802-0036, bistrosuzette.ca, @suzettebistro

The Voodoo Lounge

How many of us walk into a bar and expect to see a menu that is almost entirely gluten-free? That’s right, none of us, so Voodoo is a pleasant surprise. Whether you’re craving chicken fingers (definitely a guilty pleasure choice, but a great one), pizza or burgers, this lively bar on 16th Avenue N.W. has got you covered.

Watercress Express

With a great from-scratch mentality and a love of quality ingredients, you won’t find any unnecessary wheat fillers in any of the dishes here at Watercress. Not all of the dishes here can be made to be gluten-free, but a good majority are like the tasty pho soup and the artisan salad rolls.
