Chef Duncan Ly Wins Prestigious Award

Chef Duncan Ly is no stranger to compliments and awards.

For the second time, Chef Ly took home the gold medal at the Calgary 2013 Gold Medal Plates competition. Having formerly competed with some of the city’s best chefs, including those from Charcut, River Caf and Teatro, this year Ly represented Yellow Door Bistro and won with a Vietnamese-style braised pork, pig’s ear and BC side stripe prawn terrine.

Roy Oh representing Anju Restaurant placed second and Chef Darren MacLean representing Downtown Food placed third.

Chef Ly’s win means he goes on to represent Calgary at the Canadian Culinary Championships, which will take place on February 7 and 8 in Kelowna.

Chef Ly says, “I’m excited, honoured and humbled to represent Calgary’s dynamic culinary scene at our national championships. There are so many talented and hard-working chefs in Calgary putting our culinary scene on the map nationally and beyond.”

Also on Ly’s list of recent achievements is the recent facelift of Hotel Arts’ restaurant, Raw Bar. The renovated restaurant serves upscale Vietnamese dishes, like ginger caramel sablefish clay pot.
