A new addition to Calgary’s dining scene serves brunch with a side of melodies.
At The Sharp Music Café & Brunch, guests can brighten up their day with delicious fare while listening to live music. The elegant, family-run spot is owned by Jayden, Saelin and Aiden Oh. After arriving in Canada two and a half years ago from Korea, Saelin was unable to find many spaces to play her music in Calgary. So, she made her own.
“In Calgary there was no formal space for musicians. I love playing, but I had no idea where to go, so I made my stage at the music café,” says Saelin. “I love this, sharing my music with other people.”
Saelin, who majored in classical music and has played solo and in ensemble orchestras all over the world, performs the majority of the café’s classical violin performances. She plays both the five-string electric violin and the traditional four-string violin. You can find her plucking away at a beautiful tune at multiple live music sessions that run from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The Sharp also hosts occasional piano performances and concerts from other classical musicians.
The restaurant’s seating is set up around an open stage in the middle of the room. Guests can also expect charming antique wood furniture, plants and flowers hanging on the walls and light fixtures, and violins and fiddles mounted on the walls.
The menu features North American-style brunch plates infused with some Korean flavours. Guests can enjoy dishes like the popular Alberta bulgogi eggs Benedict, a club chicken sandwich, a garden omelette and more. For something sweet, try the French toast or the matcha pancakes with berries and fresh strawberry cream.
Soon, The Sharp will offer a tea service with fine china and delicate snacks and refreshments. The café also plans to expand its menu to include dinner in the near future.
