Before you can enjoy all the bounties and appeal of your home garden, there’s the whole process of making your garden. While it’s easy to get a bag of dirt delivered to your home, there’s more involved in a good garden. But, a lack of knowledge about gardening and growing food can deter many home gardeners. That barrier is what Doug: The Easy-Growing Garden helps tear down through its gardening kits ($599 or $399).
The garden kit is a no-tool, no-till and self-watering kit that provides all you need to prepare your own garden — in 20 minutes or less. The delivery box comes with the right amount of soil, compost, straw and mulch, as well as a drip irrigation system. Simply deconstruct the box where you want the garden, lay out the drip irrigation system and connect a timer to your hose bib and voila! Instant garden.
The goal of the kit, says co-owner Lee Martineau, is to provide a home garden kit that can help Calgarians reduce the rising costs of food by growing it themselves. The kits come with an automatic enrollment into a bi-annual soil health subscription ($99), which customers can unsubscribe from if their gardening needs change. With the subscription, a Doug’s winter soil health food box will arrive in the fall to prepare the ground for winter. Come spring, the subscription delivers new summer soil and mulch. All you need to do is buy and plant your choice of garden seeds and watch them grow into gourmet ingredients for garden-to-table cooking.
