To get to Design by Brown, you need to venture northeast and into an industrial area. Don’t worry, you’ll be rewarded for your effort when you climb the stairs to the second floor showroom.
The room is bright and filled with furniture that is new to the Calgary market. Think modern and international.
From Spain, there is the Vondom collection of indoor and outdoor sculpted furniture. France is represented by Ego Paris and its aluminum furniture, including a group of chairs that can be stacked like puzzle pieces into several arrangements. Mexico brings high-design glass furniture with Glassisimo, a collection that includes surprisingly comfortable pieces including bright-coloured glass couches. And Italy, a country frequently visited by Design by Brown founder Lee Brown, is represented by Giellesse a collection of book cases, tables, chairs, beds and, best of all, wall and closet units.
And, if technology is more your thing, play with Glass Apps in the showroom. The electrically switchable glass and smart film goes from clear to opaque on demand. Replace your windows with Glass Apps and skip window coverings all together. You can also use it as a platform for projections to display video or art.
When you are done looking at the furniture, look at the walls. Work from international artists including Brewster Brockmann, Susan Seaberry and Wosene Worke Kosrof rotating display.
Visit the showroom by appointment only.
