Anna Niemczewski, a fourth-generation member of her family to run Chinook Optical, decided to put her product-design background to good use by launching Modern Legacy Eyewear in 2019. An extension of Chinook Optical, Modern Legacy focuses on small batches of bold, statement frames handmade in Canada from biodegradable, recycled and vintage acetate. All frames are designed by Niemczewski before being manufactured by Fellow Earthlings, a multi-generation manufacturer of eyewear located on Prince Edward Island. Not only can customers take pride in the fact that they are supporting independent Canadian businesses, they should also know that Modern Legacy donates all of its profits to charity. Currently, the brand is supporting LEAF Canada, Pflag Calgary and YW Calgary.

Available in Calgary at Chinook Optical, 813 49 Ave. S.W., 403-252-1961, chinookoptical.com; and Understudy (sunglasses only), 1312 1 St. S.W., 403-452-7151, understudyshop.ca; modernlegacyeyewear.com
