A City Transformed

Meet Calgary Municipal Land Corporation: Calgary’s go-to city-building placemakers.

The iconic Central Library, built by CMLC, stands as an urban landmark and world-class institution in Calgary’s East Village.

Who helps shape a city? Beyond the land, history and communities who call it home, it’s the people who imagine something better and then show up, roll up their sleeves and build it. That’s just what Calgary Municipal Land Corporation (CMLC) does.

Born from a big idea and a bold mandate, CMLC was created by The City of Calgary to take on the projects that transform communities — projects with layers and legacy, moving parts and massive potential. For 18 years, CMLC has been committed to delivering on that mandate.

A history of transformation

CMLC’s story starts in East Village, a long-overlooked neighbourhood waiting for someone to see its potential.

East Village became CMLC’s first major transformation, creating new homes, shops, pathways and parks, resurrecting heritage buildings, and establishing a world-class library and a host of other attractions that have turned the east-end neighbourhood into a magnetic urban destination.

Then came The Culture + Entertainment District, a district buzzing with energy, anchored by the expanded BMO Centre and shaped by infrastructure and gathering places built for people, not just events.

Now, CMLC is taking on downtown catalyst projects, like the dramatic transformations of the Werklund Centre and Olympic Plaza. Calgarians can start to see a pattern: wherever the city needs imagination, infrastructure and a little extra courage, CMLC is there, alongside its partners, making it happen.

Writing the next chapter

Expanding beyond downtown, CMLC is bringing its unique brand of city-building expertise to new communities across Calgary. With the same thoughtful planning, purposeful placemaking and commitment to building places people are proud to call home, CMLC will help deliver a new model for transit-oriented communities along the Red Line LRT. These vibrant, well-connected neighbourhoods will bring more housing, opportunities and vibrancy to the places where transit intersects with community life.

Dreamers, doers and partners

CMLC’s team is made up of planners, designers, builders and connectors, as well as urbanists, strategists and placemakers. The team knows how great cities work and how they feel.

Thriving cities don’t stand still, and neither does CMLC — it’s a get-things-done kind of organization, always seeking out partners who share that mindset, like developers, designers, builders, operators and community members. CMLC knows that partnerships in support of a shared vision move this city forward.

Located on a future development site, The Bounce Games Park is a temporary placemaking activation that has become a beloved community space and popular spot for photographers and creators.

Above all, CMLC is here for Calgarians. Everything it creates  — every pathway, plaza, cultural hub and community space — is designed to make life better for the people who call this city home.
