In 2017, Michelle Horton learned that her sister had been arrested for shooting her partner after years of abuse. Instantly, Horton turned her life around to take care of her sister’s two children and embarked on a journey advocating for her release.
In her memoir, Dear Sister, Horton reflects on this experience and shares an intimate look at domestic violence, spotlighting her experience squaring off against the justice system and unveiling the powerful story of an unbreakable bond between sisters. On March 6, Horton joins Discovery House for its annual International Women’s Day event, She is…, to speak about her family’s story in the face of domestic violence.

“Michelle’s story is both stunning and familiar; the shock that families often feel when the private violence is revealed, the pain and confusion it creates for children, the unimaginable ways that women’s voices are silenced, but also the incredible power of sisters, families, friends and communities that take care of each other,” says Leslie Hill, executive director of Discovery House.
She is…
Every year, Discovery House hosts She is…, a fundraising event in support of its work helping families recover from the trauma of domestic violence. This year’s event will take place at the Calgary Petroleum Club and promises to be a morning of thought-provoking conversation.
The event includes a book signing and Q&A session with Horton as the featured speaker, a delicious breakfast buffet, networking opportunities and a chance to partake in important conversations while making an impact.
“This annual event is a meaningful, inspiring morning for guests. By attending, you do good and feel good. You are surrounded by positivity, generosity and hope. It is one of my favourite days of the year,” says Hill.
