Officially, what this individual does is “streamline processes, improve facilities and implement innovative solutions to common challenges.” But what that really means is that they shape the experience of the almost 19 million annual passengers to the Calgary International Airport who need a welcoming place to sit and eat in the middle of a nine-hour travel day, or want to find the perfect souvenir for their kids, or would love to grab a cup of coffee and buy a good book to curl up with on the plane.
In the last five years, they have overseen 25 renovations and the addition of dozens of new stores and restaurants. Their leadership helped guide the airport through the pandemic, only to emerge stronger than ever, with over $250 million in sales last year. They ensure that local products and flavours are showcased, including highlighting Indigenous artisans, giving visitors a taste of what Calgary has to offer. And, because they genuinely care about each visitor’s experience, when they saw a little girl devastated over losing her beloved stuffed animal, this person quickly arranged a complimentary shopping spree for a replacement.
Thanks to this individual, whether those 19 million people are on their way in, out or through, the airport gives them a chance to experience the warmth and hospitality of Calgary. So, it is with pride and appreciation that we award the Mayor’s White Hat Award to Chris Niergarth of the Calgary Airport Authority.
