At the heart of Mount Royal University’s (MRU) campus lies a must-visit destination for any arts enthusiast. The Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts, home to the stunning Bella Concert Hall, showcases everything from renowned international stars to local emerging talent. With exceptional acoustics and striking architecture, this lively cultural venue celebrates the best in performing arts.
Where art and architecture converge
The Taylor Centre is a showcase of how architecture can enhance the arts. Its barn-inspired exterior, a nod to MRU’s old nickname “the Barn,” makes a striking first impression. Built to LEED Gold standards, the venue is as environmentally friendly as it is beautiful. The Taylor Centre also prioritizes accessibility and inclusivity, having received The City of Calgary’s Award for Accessibility, and offers accessible seating and assistive listening devices.
Acoustic perfection
Inside, it’s the beauty of the Bella that steals the show. Named after the Taylor family matriarch, Mary Belle (Sherwood) Taylor, the Bella’s impeccable acoustics are unmatched — arguably the best in the city. Stars such as Feist, Brett Kissel, Allison Russell and William Prince have lit up the stage, serving big experiences wrapped in an intimate venue.
“Part of the experience of the Bella is the large stage size built to accommodate our philharmonic orchestra, which is extremely uncommon for a 656-seat venue,” says Phil Cimolai, general manager of the Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts.
Whether it’s a classical concert or spoken word poetry, you’re in for an auditory treat where every seat feels like the best seat in the house.
“You simply will not find a more unique or exquisite performance auditorium in Western Canada, if not the entire country,” affirms Cimolai.
Calling all comedy lovers
The Bella stage isn’t just for musicians — it also hosts top-tier comedy.
Atsuko Okatsuka, a Los Angeles-based comedian, actor and writer, will grace the Bella stage on September 14. Her HBO special, The Intruder, was named “Best Debut Special of 2022” by The New York Times, and Variety named her one of its “10 Comics to Watch for 2022.”
On October 23rd, it’s Gary Gulman’s turn with his Misfit Stand Up Tour. Famous for his HBO special, The Great Depresh, which humorously tackles mental illness, Gulman has also appeared in the blockbuster Joker and Hulu’s Life & Beth with Amy Schumer.
Other upcoming comedy shows include Jessi Cruickshank, Bruce McCulloch, Phil Hanley, Laura Ramoso, ISMO and This is That.
