17th Ave has all the essentials for an epic summer in 2022: tons of lively patios for post-work pints, proximity to the iconic Stampede grounds, and for the first year ever, a bustling calendar of free events taking place from July 1 to September 21 in Tomkins Park. You heard it here first, “Summer on 17th” is filling up your calendar for the months of July, August and September with events like live music, fitness classes, DJ and drag shows, outdoor movies and more, all of which are FREE and happening nearly every day of the week.
Summer on 17th kicks off on Canada day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. with a variety of performers, including theatrical circus and entertainment company The Little Red Ball and hoop dancing performances from Lakota Tootoosis. Check out Stampede entertainment and events in between rides at the midway from July 8 to 16, with performances from local artists such as Brandon Lorenzo, Ronnie Kerr and the Pistol Noon Band, as well as calf roping machines, a mechanical bull and line dancing.
Once you’ve had your fill of mini doughnuts and country music, Summer on 17th gives you an opportunity for a Stampede reset with free outdoor fitness classes happening every Sunday starting July 17 at 9:30 a.m. and featuring 17th Ave gyms like GoodLife Fitness and Move.
You will also be able to check out a variety of live music playing four days a week in Tomkins Park. Tune into blues and jazz performances from the likes of Emily Vay Music or Aaron Young every Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., or classical and opera performances on Sunday afternoons from groups such as Calgary Concert Opera or Palladio Music. Kickoff your weekend with a live DJ performance on Friday evenings with monthly drag queen appearances, and look for more live music from various country and Latin groups on Saturdays.
While you’re on 17th Ave enjoying Summer on 17th, you can also order takeout from your favourite local eatery and sip on an adult beverage in Tomkins Park. Bring a picnic blanket or grab one of the many tables and picnic tables in the park, order out from one of many fabulous Red Mile dining spots, and enjoy an al fresco dining experience in the heart of all 17th Ave has to offer.
