Inside Patti Grier’s home, laughter and joyful commotion often fill the air. Grier has seven grandchildren, so it was important to have a purpose-built space to accommodate play and imagination.
“I wanted a space that was special, different and a bit whimsical. I wanted a place that they could grow into,” explains Grier.
In 2022, California Closets brought just enough whimsy and functionality to the now-dedicated playroom in Grier’s home. Inside the room, books and toys fill the floor-to-ceiling shelving units, a Murphy bed comes down and mirror panelling keeps the space full and bright — a specific request from Grier.

“The kids love it. It’s their favourite place. They come into the house, and they all go immediately up to the playroom and start ripping out all their toys and stuff from the cupboards. California Closets did a fantastic job,” affirms Grier.
More than closets
Despite the name, California Closets does a lot more than wardrobe storage. The company specializes in storage solutions for the entire home, including home offices, garages, laundry rooms, mud rooms and more.
It was important for Grier to have a Murphy bed in the playroom so that the space could double as a daytime play area and a bedroom for sleepovers at Nana and Papa’s. Knowing California Closets specializes in making spaces work, she reached out with an idea that centred on the Murphy bed, and the team worked collaboratively with Grier to bring the vision for the entire room to life.
Working together
Every California Closets project includes a complimentary consultation that goes well beyond a simple phone call. The team of designers leads a collaborative meeting inside the client’s home, where they measure the space, discuss options and bring products and samples.
“We’re really able to give clients that showroom feel in their home,” says senior design consultant LiShelle Trembath. “We have a digital showroom as well, to pull up images and all the things that they may need to see. We make it really easy for them to feel like we’ve given them exactly what they were hoping for and, hopefully, more.”
Grier explains that the team accommodated her request for mirror panelling while ensuring it followed safety protocols and fit the space correctly. California Closets’ customer service and expertise stand out the most when Grier looks back on her experience. “They were just really easy to deal with, very responsive, very flexible. We’ve done a lot of renovations in our home, and this was one of the easiest ones that we have done,” she says.
“Our goal is to make somebody feel like they got more than they expected, that they love their space, and they feel connected to their home and connected to us. We hope they can contact us at any time if they need anything,” affirms Trembath.
Work that lasts generations
Since Grier’s playroom renovation, her grandkids have grown — and their toys and needs have changed. Still, the room continues to serve as a space for play and creativity, and it evolves alongside the kids.
“It’s evolved from a room for babies, and it’s going to evolve into a room for teenagers. I keep changing what’s in there to meet what age they are, but the design, the storage and how it looks is timeless,” says Grier.

Thanks to product quality, professional installation and modular flexibility, California Closets services pass the test of time. Clients can customize certain products to grow with evolving needs by moving closet rods or adjusting shelves, thanks to pre-drilled holes in the system.
“It looks good for a lifetime. The colours don’t fade, and clients can change the system so that it functions for them as they grow. That really is the benefit to our systems,” says Trembath.
