Get Ready for One Yellow Rabbit’s 39th Annual High Performance Rodeo

Ronnie Burkett, Mump & Smoot and Lucy Darling join the festival packed with 28 productions over three weeks in January.

For three electrifying weeks this winter, One Yellow Rabbit, led by artistic director Blake Brooker, will bring over 190 artists to Calgary for the 39th Annual High Performance Rodeo, Calgary’s International Festival of the Arts, running from January 14 to February 2, 2025.

This year’s lineup features artists from Calgary and beyond — from Ireland to New Orleans — while celebrating Rodeo favourites, including newly minted Governor General Award-winner Ronnie Burkett, the “national treasures” Mump & Smoot and Carisa Hendrix’s magical ‘Lucy Darling.’ The festival will showcase nearly 30 productions, plus 10 free events, workshops and artist talks that span the whimsical to the provocative: think heart-wrenching puppetry, apocalyptic clowns and the most theatrical council meeting you’ll ever witness.

Festival producer Oliver Armstrong shares his awe, saying, “Sometimes I have to shake my head and realize just how privileged we are to have this sensational family of Canadian and international creators that want… no, need to bring their work to the Rodeo. These productions are the very top-tier of the local and touring work that most audiences never get to see.”

Here’s a taste of this year’s exciting offerings:

Ronnie Burkett in Wonderful Joe (Martha Cohen Theatre, January 21–26)

The iconic Ronnie Burkett presents Wonderful Joe, a moving story about Joe and his dog Mister, who face losing their home but embark on a journey that reveals resilience, magic and joy in even the most challenging times. Written during the pandemic, this play is a reminder of life’s beauty and the importance of community. Burkett, beloved in Canada’s theatre scene, delivers an intricate character study that will resonate with anyone who has sought hope in adversity.

Mump & Smoot in Exit (Martha Cohen Theatre, January 29 to February 1)

Returning after a 15-year break, the infamous Mump & Smoot — Canada’s masters of horror-comedy clowning — bring Exit, a new show packed with their signature dark humour. Mump & Smoot, two characters from the bizarre planet Ummo, embark on a surreal journey filled with chilling comedy, delivering a performance that’s been likened to a blend of Sartre and Cirque du Soleil. This eerie adventure, featuring their unique language and outrageous antics, takes audiences on an unforgettable ride. Leave your preconceptions about clowns at the door — this is not child’s play.

Lucy Darling in Indulgence (Big Secret Theatre, January 28–30)

Back by popular demand, Lucy Darling, a global sensation in the magic world, returns with Indulgence. This semi-improvised comedy blends irresistible charm, razor-sharp wit and jaw-dropping magic in a show that dazzles and delights. Carisa Hendrix’s Lucy Darling character has won 15 awards, including Stage Magician of the Year, and captured hearts with her unique style and humour. Her accolades even include features in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! and the Guinness Book of World Records.
