In a city brimming with creative talent, Marketspot YYC has become a cornerstone of Calgary’s artisan community. This year marks a decade since its founders, Emma McCaul and Andrej Brajic, combined their visions to create a platform celebrating local and handmade goods. What started as a grassroots initiative has blossomed into a thriving business that continues to connect Calgarians with the artisans who craft their wares.
Humble beginnings
The journey began in 2015 when McCaul’s ART SPOT, a platform for emerging artists, merged with Brajic’s Market YYC Association, a collective of local makers. Together, they launched a series of small artisan markets in Eau Claire Mall, showcasing the work of local creators. These events quickly gained traction, offering a vibrant alternative to conventional retail experiences and planting the seeds for what would become Marketspot YYC.
Over the years, Marketspot grew from its humble beginnings into a multifaceted operation. Pop-up shops across Calgary — and throughout Western Canada — allowed more makers to join their community, building a loyal customer base eager to shop local. Today, Marketspot has two permanent retail locations in Market Mall and The CORE, solidifying its presence in Calgary’s retail landscape.
Adapting through the challenges
While the COVID-19 pandemic presented unprecedented challenges, it also became a catalyst for innovation. Recognizing the struggles of their vendors, McCaul and Brajic expanded Marketspot into the digital space. They launched an online marketplace, a curated platform exclusively featuring Canadian handmade goods. This e-commerce venture allowed artisans to reach a wider audience while staying true to Marketspot’s mission of championing local craftsmanship.
“For us, it’s always been about community,” says Brajic. “Every purchase at Marketspot represents someone choosing to support a dream, a passion and a local story.”
A steadfast commitment to local artists
Marketspot remains firmly rooted in its market origins, keeping one foot on the ground through initiatives like University District Night Markets, which continue to draw crowds of loyal shoppers. The team also supports ART SPOT’s annual events, including the beloved Under $100 Art Show, which provides an accessible way for Calgarians to own original art while supporting emerging creators.
The success of Marketspot YYC is credited not only to the vision of its founders but also to its dedicated staff and the vibrant community of vendors who pour their hearts into every product.
“Reaching this milestone is humbling,” reflects McCaul. “It’s a reminder of how much creativity exists in Calgary and across Canada, and how important it is to give it a space to shine. None of this would be possible without our team and the artisans who make Marketspot what it is.”
As Marketspot YYC celebrates 10 years, it’s clear that its commitment to local artisans and the Calgary community is stronger than ever. With plans to continue expanding their platform — both in physical spaces and online — the next decade promises even more opportunities to discover and support Canadian-made treasures.
