Romero Lounge & Cocktail Bar Brings Prohibition-Inspired Cocktails to South Calgary

A new South Calgary lounge brings crafted cocktails, shareable plates and Alberta rum-running history together.

Alberta has never been short on good stories, especially the kind that move through border towns, back rooms and the parts of history that rarely make it into the usual retelling.

That spirit sits at the heart of Romero Lounge & Cocktail Bar, a newly reimagined cocktail lounge located inside Romero Distilling Co. in South Calgary. Inspired by Alberta’s prohibition-era rum-running history, Romero brings a local story to the table while offering something the south does not always have enough of: a proper cocktail room built for lunch, dinner, date nights and staying for one more.

What began as a distillery tasting room has been transformed into a more complete destination, with crafted cocktails at the centre, shareable plates alongside them and a room designed for conversation. The feeling is intimate, relaxed and cinematic, with warm hospitality, considered details and a pace that encourages guests to stay a little longer.

The connection to rum is a natural one. Romero Distilling Co. has built its name on award-winning rum made here in Calgary, and the lounge gives those spirits a fuller stage. The cocktail program, developed by the family behind Romero, is rum-forward at heart, but not rum-only. Guests can expect a broader, well-rounded bar menu with polished classics, original cocktails and drinks designed for a range of tastes.

The mostly untold story of rum-running in Alberta runs through the experience, from the name and inspiration behind the lounge to the stories shared during Romero’s tour and tasting. For guests who want to go deeper, the tasting experience offers a closer look at the distillery, the rum-making process and the prohibition-era history that helped shape the concept. After that, the lounge brings the story into the present with a cocktail in hand, a plate for the table and a room built for settling in.

Food plays a supporting role in the best possible way. The menu, consulted on by Darren Fabian, director of food and beverage for the Pursuit Group, is built around shareable plates designed to complement the cocktail program. It also makes Romero an easy choice for lunch, dinner and date nights, especially if you’re seeking a polished place to indulge without heading downtown.

For guests in South Calgary, Romero offers downtown energy without the hassle, including the simple pleasure of free parking. It works for a business lunch, a date night, a catch-up with friends over dinner, an after-dinner drink or an evening that calls for something more atmospheric than the neighbourhood standard.

Romero Lounge & Cocktail Bar is now open inside Romero Distilling Co., bringing crafted cocktails, shareable plates and warm hospitality. Open Tuesday to Thursday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., and Friday and Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
