Stampeding and Eating

A guide to good eats within walking distance of the Stampede grounds.

It won’t be long now until cowboy boots, spectacular fireworks, and white tents are omnipresent in downtown Calgary, signifying the return of the Calgary Stampede. While this annual 10-day event is well known for adding Western flare to the city, The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth has also become a great opportunity to experience some of Calgary’s best food and drink offerings, found both on and off the midway. Here are just a few spots where hungry — and thirsty — folk can find delicious eats and drinks within walking distance of the Stampede grounds.

Two Penny and the Tea House

Two Penny’s chef, Mharlon Atienza, is taking creative license during Stampede and serving American style BBQ. The Tea Smoked BBQ menu will include delicious eats like tea smoked ribs, brisket and Sichuan hot links, served with house-made milk buns. Hungry guests are also encouraged to try savoury sides like Asian slaw and Sichuan potato salad.
Enjoy this BBQ feast downstairs in the Tea House for the full 10 days of July festivities along with alternative Stampede entertainment, or in Two Penny when booking private parties or large group reservations.
HOT TIP: Two Penny will be opening a patio space just in time for Stampede this year.

Native Tongues

While Dill Pickle Ice Pops and Deep-Fried Chicken Skins have their place as Stampede treats, there’s never a bad time for Mexican food and margaritas. Beyond a bumping weekday happy hour with $5 margaritas and sweet deals on that juicy Hamburguesa al Carbon, the taqueria’s takeout window will also be serving up Sonora Dogs and Chimichangas — a great treat before or after the midway (and only available during Stampede). For those looking to switch things up from the standard drink menu in the tents, pony up for some smoky Mezcal-based cocktails or go for a full Mezcal flight — one of Native Tongues’ specialties.

Want to throw your own taco party at home or at the office? Simply book the Home Taquero Kits to go. Ideal for groups of six or more.

Calcutta Cricket Club

Located just a short walk from all the main Stampede events is Calcutta Cricket Club. In the summertime, this patio space is one of Calgary’s greatest outdoor gems. Here, crushable cocktails and tropical vibes are calling your name after the Chuckwagon races and the Coca-Cola Stage. Swap out the hay bale experience for afternoon happy hour in this urban oasis, or catch the cheap beer and $5 Kati Rolls special after 10 pm nightly —  a great way to cap off a full day!

Happy Stampeding!
