Strengthening the System of Care

Rejuvenation Dermatology’s sustainable growth model ensures more Canadians get access to timely dermatology care.

Rejuvenation Dermatology started with a question: How do we treat more Albertans?

Founded in 1984 in Calgary, Rejuvenation Dermatology is a physician-owned and operated network of dermatology clinics. The concept was born from a desire to delegate dermatologists’ backend administrative work to a supportive team, freeing up capacity to see more patients and provide better care to patients. That model is stronger than ever today — Rejuvenation Dermatology has grown into a network of nine clinics, with over 50 physicians and 500 employees, meaning there are roughly 10 staff members per physician, taking care of referral processing, patient rooming, bookings, cosmetic consultations, charting and billing.

“The entire support infrastructure in the background elevates doctors out of that administrative burden and into the ability to provide more adequate care and see more patients on any given day, and that allows more access to dermatology care for our patients,” explains Tim Dinger, president of Rejuvenation Dermatology.

When you enter a Rejuvenation clinic, you’re met with an elevated feel that strays away from the standard clinical setting. “We spend a lot of effort and time to ensure that the patient has a very comfortable and enjoyable experience,” says Dinger.

Rejuvenation Dermatology offers a robust range of services, from early detection and early treatment all the way to skin cancer surgeries, and even a clinical trial department. It also specializes in a variety of cosmetic treatments, such as injectables, laser hair restoration and scar treatments. But what really sets it apart is its scalable support network that ensures patients are seen quickly and efficiently.

Easing system strain

In Alberta and many other provinces, patients face wait times of months, and sometimes even years, to see a dermatologist.

“We’ve seen quite a lot of strain, a lot of pressure on dermatologists, and on specialists in general, because we only have so few that are graduating each year,” says Dinger. “We can’t increase the number of dermatologists, but we can allow the dermatologists to see more patients.”

By providing each of its specialists with scaled support, Rejuvenation Dermatology sees about 1,500 patients a day across all of its locations, and it continues to grow. The network recently opened its latest clinic in West Springs to serve Calgary’s growing west population. The infrastructure has been designed to ease access with 30 exam rooms, one of Rejuvenation’s largest clinics. Once at capacity, the west clinic will welcome between 500 and 600 patients a day. The model also includes general practitioners within the clinic who can provide a referral to see the dermatologist. This removes a barrier for those who are struggling to access a primary care provider for a referral.

Nation-wide growth

Throughout its extensive evolution over the past few decades, Rejuvenation Dermatology continues to see demand, which means there remain more Albertans and Canadians to serve. The network plans to continue expanding into other provinces to help meet the needs of more Canadians, with a focus on expanding into additional remote towns.

“We want to be part of a positive change in Canada and want to contribute to a better health-care environment in the Canadian market. If we can contribute to that, then we’ve done our job,” says Dinger.
