Support for All: Bra Shopping That Puts You First

Canadian lingerie brand Understance aims to deliver supportive and comfortable bra shopping journeys.

Bra shopping has long had a reputation for being uncomfortable, not just physically, but emotionally, too. For many, it’s awkward, confusing and frustrating. But Canadian lingerie brand Understance is on a mission to change that.

At its Inglewood location, Understance offers a refreshing alternative: a calm, supportive and truly inclusive shopping experience.

“If bra shopping has ever felt frustrating or intimidating, we want to change that for you,” says Rajvi Shah, retail director at Understance.

From thoughtful store design and inclusive practices to a team-wide focus on support — not sales — Understance is reimagining what lingerie shopping can be.

Designed differently

In traditional retail, the assumption is that the more time customers spend browsing, the more they’ll buy. That often means crowded racks, confusing layouts and a bit of guesswork. Not at Understance.

Understance flips the script. Step into the Inglewood shop and you’ll find a calm and intentionally designed space where every bra style is clearly displayed by size, just like in a product catalogue. No digging, no circling back, no pressure.

“We want the shopping experience to feel straightforward and not a game of impulse,” says Shah. ”The store is designed so that you can be as independent or as supported as you want. It’s easy to browse and find what you need with clear labels and an easy-to-shop store layout. You don’t have to talk to anyone unless you want to, but if you do need help, our team is here for you, with no judgment and no pressure.”

Inclusive shopping

Understance carries one of the widest in-store size ranges and most affordable prices in North America, with band sizes from 28 to 48 and cups from A to N — most styles priced around $68. But inclusivity here goes far beyond the size; it’s about making everyone feel considered, not just included.

The staff are trained to support everybody, including helping customers with textile sensitivities, post-surgery needs and diverse gender expressions. “Everyone deserves to feel comfortable when shopping for a bra and find something that fits their body, whatever that may be,” says Shah.

The team at Understance knows everyone comes in on a different journey — some may feel like it’s a fun and light-hearted experience, while others may feel emotional or overwhelmed. The goal is to make everyone feel welcome and comfortable, so customers set the pace.

Rewarding the team, not the individual

Unlike most retailers, Understance doesn’t pay individual commissions. Instead, store teams share a group bonus, encouraging collaboration and customer-first care.

“Our team members support each other as much as they support our customers,” explains Shah. “It’s about teamwork, and that makes a big difference in the store’s atmosphere. People can trust that our staff are genuinely there to help them, not to meet a target.”

The result? A calm, welcoming atmosphere where you’re not just finding a better bra — you’re having a better experience.

“We’re here for you, no matter where you are in your bra journey,” affirms Shah. “Whether you’re looking for your first great fit, recovering from surgery, adapting to body changes or just searching for something more comfortable, there’s a place for you at Understance.”
