The Power of Potential

Building our future means investing in what matters today.

What does it mean to be sustainable?

Today, the word sustainability invokes an important sense of meaning. Sustainability is about the long-game — it’s about making decisions in the present that keep in mind the needs of the future. It’s about resiliency, building from the strength we gain through navigating challenging circumstances, and channeling our energy into innovative thinking, collaboration, connection and care, all of which make for a strong future.

At ENMAX, our mission is to power the potential of people, business and communities by safely and responsibly providing electricity and energy services in ways that matter today and tomorrow. We do this through responsible planning and decision-making that take into account the well-being of our team, our customers, the communities we serve, the environment we operate within, the reliability of our energy supply, and the resiliency of Calgary’s electricity infrastructure.

In 2019 alone, we invested $305 million in Calgary’s transmission and distribution system to help ensure Calgarians continue to have safe, reliable power. In 2019, ENMAX also achieved the Canadian Electricity Association’s designation as a Sustainable Electricity Company, an honour that recognizes the importance we place on environmental, social and governance performance.

Here are just a few examples of how we are delivering on our mission with both today and tomorrow in mind:

Providing exceptional customer service and support

We’re dedicated to providing the tools, information and advice our customers need in order to understand and manage their energy consumption. Our Customer Care team responded to 760,000 calls, emails and web chats in 2019, and achieved an 86 per cent customer satisfaction rating.

Safe, reliable service when you need it

The delivery of electricity service is essential, and any time we’re faced with circumstances outside of normal business operations, we take proactive steps to reinforce our ability to safely and reliably deliver electricity and energy services to homes, businesses and communities. In response to the COVID-19 global pandemic, we continue to follow a series of prudent measures to ensure the health and safety of our team and the continuity of essential electricity and energy services.

Preparing for the future

We introduced an electric vehicle (EV) pilot program in 2019, designed to offset the cost of EV chargers for eligible participants. This first-of-its-kind program will help reduce GHG emissions and provide valuable data as we prepare Calgary’s electricity network to meet growing demand.

Innovating our energy supply

We installed 16 MW of grid-connected solar in 2019, increasing our provincial installations by over 100 per cent. We’re also engaged in a pilot project to explore how our secondary distribution network can enable urban customers to sell renewable electricity back to the grid.

Building community

We know strong communities make for a strong future, and we’re deeply committed to the communities we serve. In 2019, ENMAX invested $3.5 million in cash and in-kind donations, and our team contributed over 4,000 volunteer hours in the community, including with Aspen Family and Community Network Society, Boys and Girls Club of Calgary, Calgary Dream Centre and Alberta Children’s Hospital, among many others.

We’re proud to live our values through our service to customers, our commitment to responsible business practices, and our partnerships with the dedicated agencies that provide invaluable services and support within our communities.
