An Outdoor Winter Party Comes To Container Bar

Just because it’s winter doesn’t mean you shouldn’t drink and dine alfresco.

Container Bar first opened this past summer and it is hosting a special winter party this Friday.

This time of year in St. Petersburg, Russia, outdoor parties on Nevsky Prospect, the city’s main street, energize the long dark nights. To celebrate the frosty season, Calgary will get its very own outdoor winter party and it’s hosted at Container Bar on January 16.

Usually closed for the cold months, Container Bar, which first opened this summer and has become a popular alfresco drinking spot, is opening for one night only for a special event that encourages plucky Calgarians to take back patio season.

Here’s what you can expect.

What you should wear

All great seasonal outdoor parties require a dress code and this Friday guests can choose between two for the event: furs and diamonds, or parkas and snow pants. Channel Daisy Buchanan and sport a floor length fur coat and plenty of jewels (visit Pretty Little Things in Inglewood if your closet is missing furs) or come to the party right after your day at the slopes.

What you’ll eat and drink

While the party might be in an alleyway, the drinking here won’t be taking place out of a paper bag. It’s going to be classy, highlighted by the fact that there will be six different Champagnes on offer for the evening, available by the glass.

And it just gets classier. Container Bar will be serving oysters and caviar, both of which are good pairings with Champagnes.

Who will be there

Besides everyone who’s anyone? Eric Giesbrecht will be at the event’s oyster bar, acting the part of guest shucker. Giesbrecht is widely recognized as “Calgary’s oyster man.” He’s apprenticed at Catch and the Oyster Bar and owns Meta4Foods, which carries a wide variety of east coast and west coast oysters, caviar, sturgeon and other fishy delicacies.

Other information you need to know

The event runs from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. in the alley next to Brasserie and Winebar (1131 Kensington Rd. N.W.) RSVPs are recommended; call 403-457-4148.
