Ever wonder what Earth looked like 3.5 billion years ago? Well, wonder no more, because the closest thing to time travel has come to Calgary.

Immersive technology studios PHI Studio and Studio Excurio have launched a new virtual reality (VR) experience about prehistoric earth and its evolution called Life Chronicles. These are the same studios behind the Horizon of Khufu VR experience that landed in Calgary last winter. Life Chronicle’s 45-minute expedition was also co-produced by France’s National Museum of Natural History. Scientists and historians from the museum worked alongside the technology studios to create a more scientific and accurate depiction of these great historical periods.

During the Life Chronicles’ experience, guests use wireless VR headsets that fully immerse participants in a virtual environment with beautiful whimsical graphics and audio narration. Life Chronicles journeys through geological periods dating back billions of years (including the Cambrian, Carboniferous and Jurassic periods) and retells the story of the species and environments at those times. Guided by two virtual companions, Charlie and Darwin, guests can walk with dinosaurs, see prehistoric landscapes and interact with early humans in the experience. Traverse through diverse virtual environments like oceans filled with microorganisms and fields filled with primordial vegetation.

Both the Horizon of Khufu and Life Chronicles VR experiences are on now at CF Chinook Centre until August 31, 2025.
