Make Your Own Holiday Decorations at These Upcoming Workshops

Options range from a craft night out where you’ll make a handful of festive items to more advanced art instruction that will result in masterpieces like felted animals and sterling silver ornaments.

Stuff Your Stockings

Pinnovate is the DIY arts and crafts space in the southeast. You can drop-in to make crafts like string art and menu boards. Or, craft several things in two hours at its Stuff Your Stockings event. By the end of the night, you’ll have made and personalized ornaments, napkin tiles, gift tags, bath bombs and mason jars filled with treats.

Homemade Christmas Gift Workshops

When: Thursday, November 16, 7 p.m.
Where: Famous 5 Centre of Canadian Women, Heritage Park

The best inspiration for homemade holiday items might be going back in time to when everything was homemade. Heritage Park will teach you how to make five things in two hours. By the end of the evening, you’ll walk away with lavender sachets, a tea cup beeswax candle, a mason jar sewing case, spiced tea mix and peppermint candy cane sugar scrub.

 

Felted Fox Ornament

When: Sunday, November 19, 9 a.m.

If you’ve ever wanted to make a tiny felted fox inside a hanging glass ball, now is your chance. This course is taught by Dena Seiferling of Pickle & Francois. Her work is beautiful and one look at it will help explain why this class is six hours long. This squirrel is not the fox you’ll create, but it gives you an idea of the detail you can get with felting.

Himmeli Wreath Workshop with Salvage + Bronze

When: Friday, November 24, 7 p.m.

Himmeli are those geometric sculptures that originated as Finnish Christmas ornaments. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to make a wreath with the creatives behind Salvage + Bronze. You can make your wreath copper, gold or black. All of the supplies are included in the workshop fee and Outside the Shape always makes you feel welcome with a glass of bubbly and a treat.

 

 

Sterling Silver Wire Ornaments

When: Saturday, November 25, 9 a.m.

Adam Legace will walk you through the techniques of wire working and finishing. By the end of this Chinook Learning Services class, you’ll have a one-of-a-kind ornament made out of sterling silver, copper or bronze.

 

Seasonal Outdoor Planter

Amborella Floral is mostly known for its beautiful hand-tied bouquets (it has a seasonal workshop for that on November 21), but around the holidays it also teaches us how to make an outdoor planter. Build a planter and learn the basics of outdoor foliage and how to give it a seasonal twist.

 

Indoor Foliage Arrangement with Embrace Gardening

When: Thursday, November 30, 6:30 p.m.

Learn about the history of decorating with winter greens, as well as some tips, tricks and techniques for making them look good and last. Then, tackle your own centrepiece arrangement using cedar, pine, fir, spruce, cones and berries.
