“I stopped trying to be cool a long time ago.”
With that sentence, Ivan & Alyosha frontman Tim Wilson neatly sums up the Seattle rock-folk band’s quest for honest expression. Freedom from self-consciousness has allowed the group to connect with listeners in ways that a more contrived image might preclude.
“The more I get to know you, baby, the more I see exactly what’s wrong with me.” – I Was Born To Love Her
“Fathers, be kind to your children; you know it matters what you tell them.” – Fathers Be Kind
Ivan & Alyosha’s ear-friendly indie-pop melodies and soaring vocal harmonies are an easy-to-swallow coating for their spiritually, emotionally and socially aware songs – showcased on their second full-length release, “All the Times We Had.” The band, whose name refers to the main characters in Dostoevsky’s “The Brothers Karamazov,” began as a duo of Wilson and Ryan Carbary. The current iteration also includes Pete Wilson, Tim Kim and drummer Jesse Carmichael. The band’s shows have earned it a devoted following; the propulsive melodies and infectious hooks of Ivan & Alyosha’s music make for a fun and uplifting live experience.
Currently on a wide-ranging North American tour, Ivan & Alyosha perform at the Hi-Fi Club on Saturday, May 4. Joining them are Florida foursome Twin Forks and New York trio the Lone Bellow.
