Amanda Arbuthnot, design lead for reading literacy and storytelling at Calgary’s Central Library, recommends this coming-of-age novel about how the lives of a young Black babysitter and a white mother of two become entangled after a supermarket confrontation. “I am a white mother,” Arbuthnot says, “and I think the author does such a brilliant job of capturing that sort of naïveté of the white mom. She was generous enough with her characters, even though they didn’t always act in the best way.”
