For all its charms, the holidays can be a trying time, filled with distant relatives, dinner planning and mountains of gift-related stress, getting through it can feel like a monumental task. If you’re looking for a Christmas challenge that you feel you can actually accomplish, the minds behind Escape Capers, Calgary’s only hosted escape room, have an experience for you.
Its newest room, The Christmas Caper, is exactly what it sounds like. A Christmas-themed escape room that gives four to nine players the chance to ring in the holidays by solving puzzles and finding clues of a yuletide nature. A spiritual successor to Maxim’s Dinner Party, one of Escape Capers’ first rooms, The Christmas Caper has you hunting for an antique Santa figurine during a Christmas party held at a rich patron’s mansion. You have to find your way out of in less than an hour.
The room features a series of non-linear puzzles, which means that while some people work out the Christmas song set list, others can be figuring out the presents under the tree or which seasonal cocktails to order. In addition, the room features a “host” actor in character. Players will have to interact with the host to solve puzzles and they can provide hints when needed.
While the room is clearly intended for the holidays, it will be available for bookings in the new year as well. It is appropriate for anyone from ages 10 and up. Escape Capers is closed on December 25 and open throughout the rest of the holidays, including January 1.
