Nominated by YMCA Calgary
At YMCA Calgary, a group of young changemakers is proving that leadership and philanthropy have no age limit.
The Shane Homes YMCA Alumni Leadership Group, made up of youth in grades seven to nine, has emerged as a powerful force for good, transforming members’ own sense of belonging into meaningful community impact.
Over the past year, these young leaders have organized and led a range of fundraising initiatives, from selling 3D-printed ornaments at a winter market to hosting lemonade stands, cotton candy sales and family-focused events like a Halloween haunted house and “Skate with Santa.” Their efforts have raised nearly $5,000 in support of YMCA programs, helping ensure children and families can access camps, childcare and wellness opportunities, regardless of financial barriers.
Yet the true impact of their work reaches far beyond dollars raised. Through its initiatives, the group is building community, fostering connection and inspiring others to give. The group’s leadership encourages peers and adults alike to become more engaged, creating a ripple effect of generosity that strengthens the broader community.
What sets the Alumni Leadership Group apart is its ownership. Youth take charge, plan events, manage fundraising activities and engage directly with the public, demonstrating confidence, creativity and care. Their commitment extends beyond the YMCA through volunteer work across Calgary, deepening both their impact and understanding of community needs.
Together, they show that when young people lead, they inspire lasting change.
