Where to Get Takeaway Salads in Calgary

These six fast-casual restaurants can help you out if you are looking to eat more vegetables, go Paleo or just have a yummy takeaway lunch.

In the past few years, there has been an influx of fast-casual restaurants specializing in food in bowls. It's good news for those of us looking for a takeout salad for lunch or dinner. Most of these places also have grain bowls, some have smoothie bowls and there is a good chance you can also pick up an energy bite or fresh juice while you're there. But we're talking salads here. This is what they offer.

This is a quickly expanding chain across Canada with about a dozen locations open (or opening soon) in Calgary. Like similar restaurants, it has rice bowls and salads. For its salads, you can order it as starter or full size or get the ingredients in a wrap. There is a selection of pre-designed salads on the menu, including Chopped Signature with lettuce, cranberries, roasted pecans, red onions, feta and croutons, or you can build your own salad. Order online and pre-pay to save time when you get there.

Standout ingredient: Pita chips for some extra crunch.

Tip: The Chopped Leaf has a loyalty program that earns you one point for every dollar you spend. When you reach 150 points, you get $10 to use towards a menu purchase.

At Dirtybelly, you order your salad by the scoop. Mix and match one to four scoops of salads like the charred carrots with almonds, cilantro and sesame seeds or the pineapple chicken with green beans, coconut flakes and jerk vinaigrette. You can make it a grain bowl, by getting your salad scooped onto a bed of arugula and quinoa.

Standout ingredient: Hot Buffalo cauliflower wings. They're served warm.

Tip: Go when the weather is terrible and you don't want to go outside. The two downtown locations are on the Plus-15 levels of The Core and Brookfield Place. If you really don't want to move, The Core location also has delivery through Foodora.

The Core, 403-452-3340; CF Market Mall, 403-475-4816; Brookfield Place, 214, 225 6 Ave. S.W., 403-263-2277, dirtbelly.com

You can customize your salad here or go with one of the salads on the menu. The seasonal menu has lettuce, roasted sweet potatoes, Brussels sprouts and turkey with cranberry vinaigrette in the Thanksgiving bowl.  Coming in at just 292 calories, the Thai One On salad has lettuce, sprouts, carrots, cabbage, spicy sunflower seeds, cucumber, basil citrus shrimp and spicy cashew dressing. If you are feeding a crowd, order the 160-ounce family-sized salad. If you don't feel like leaving your home or office, order online and have it delivered with UberEats.

Standout ingredient: Parmesan crisps.

Tip: Order a drink. Wine is half price with any salad. Or, get the house-made fresca. The flavour changes daily.
