Joanna Tzavaras, the owner of Lil’ Pink Daisy Florals, shares her tips on creating great outdoor arrangements.

Fake It

“Calgary winters are extreme, so natural florals will not last long in your outdoor arrangement. I recommend using artificial silk florals and greens. It’s cost effective in the long run because you can use them year after year, and, depending on the style you want, you can mix in real winter greens like pine and cedar.”

Protect It

“Make your artificial florals and greens last longer by spraying them with a protective coating like Krylon Crystal Clear acrylic. It will protect against moisture damage and fading. But, if your greens do start to lose their colour, touch them up with an appropriately hued spray paint.”

Keep It Balanced

“For traditional homes, symmetrical arrangements flanking the door are beautiful, but ample space is a must. Make sure there is room for guests in high-traffic areas. In contemporary homes, which often have less space, I like to design in groups of threes with varying heights to create an abundant display with a smaller footprint.”

Keep It Seasonal

“This year I’m embracing a sophisticated look for winter planters – very lush with no decorative elements like bows, feathers or glitter. There are so many realistic-looking artificial silk florals out there now, like magnolias, amaryllis and holly. The Silk Plant Warehouse is an amazing resource for these items.”

Keep It Simple

“Stick to one theme. Whether you’re going for a traditional, rustic or modern look, don’t be tempted to use every-thing you see at the craft or silk plant store. I also recommend taking a peek at a colour wheel to select a complementary palette to your home.”
