Canadian News Sites are Being Blocked on Social Media. Here’s How to Support Avenue’s Calgary Content

It might be harder to see Avenue content on Facebook, Instagram and Google, but there are still lots of ways to get our content and support us.

If you’re an Avenue reader who likes to scroll through Facebook and Instagram from time to time, you’ve probably become accustomed to seeing our content on those platforms. Like most media brands, we’ve established a presence on these apps as a way to connect with our readers. You also may be used to seeing our articles come up when you search Google for things like “best restaurants” or “things to do in Calgary.” Searching Google for information we need is a process that has become so natural most of us do it without much thought.

But there’s been a recent shakeup in how all of this works, the result of which means you might no longer see Avenue stories on your social media news feeds or have much luck finding our stories on Google.

Back in June, the Canadian government passed Bill C-18, legislation known as The Online News Act. The goal of the act is to have platforms such as Facebook (a.k.a. Meta) and Google compensate the news and media organizations that produce the content that keep readers and users coming back to their sites.

In response, Meta and Google both declared they will block Canadian journalism from showing up on news feeds and in search results. And as a publication that’s made in Canada working exclusively with Canadian content creators, this may include Avenue.

Our main concern is to continue to engage with our readers and have a sustainable business connecting you to your city and the amazing things happening here. Now we need your help to do that. The good news is that we already have the tools to do so! If you want great access to Avenue content about local dining news, real estate, shopping and our in-depth reporting on uniquely Calgary topics and issues, then cut out the middleman and come directly to us: subscribe to the print magazine and have us delivered to your doorstep, bookmark AvenueCalgary.com on your web browser of choice (or better yet, make it your homepage). Subscribe to our free newsletters and have Avenue stories delivered directly to your email inbox.

We’ll continue creating content that supports our mission of trusted, accurate storytelling that connects and engages our city and we want our readers to be along for the ride.
