For generations, Calgarians have come to the Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo to connect with wildlife. But the Wilder Institute’s impact extends far beyond the zoo’s 125 acres. Across Canada and around the world, the organization is working to safeguard species, restore ecosystems and build a future where people and wildlife thrive together. Wilder Voices offers Calgarians the chance to learn more about the conservation work their support helps make possible.
The final stop
After stops in Lethbridge, Kelowna, Edmonton and Ottawa, the Wilder Voices Speaker Series returns to Calgary for an evening of stories, science and conversation. Now in its second year, the series brings award-winning conservationist and naturalist Brian Keating together with Dr. Gráinne McCabe, the Wilder Institute’s chief conservation officer, to explore the challenges facing Canada’s wildlife and wild places, the conservation work underway to address them and what it will take to shape a wilder future.
The stakes
One in five species in Canada is currently at risk of extinction. Across the country, wildlife and the places they call home are facing growing pressures, from habitat loss and climate change to human activity. The challenges are significant, but so are the opportunities to make a difference. Wilder Voices connects these challenges to the work happening in communities across the country and to the reasons there is still hope: from conservation breeding programs to the everyday choices that people are making for wildlife.
One Wild Future
The Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo is one part of the institute’s work, connecting people with wildlife and inspiring action. Beyond the zoo, conservation breeding, species recovery, research and field programs are helping address the challenges facing wildlife and wild places. Together, this work is part of One Wild Future, the Wilder Institute’s roadmap for connecting its work across animal care, applied conservation, species recovery, research, education and public engagement into one shared direction.
“Canada’s wild places are at the heart of who we are,” says McCabe. “When we protect these ecosystems, we’re safeguarding our health, our communities and the future of every species, including our own.”

As McCabe puts it, “This is our shared future, and we’re not building it alone. Every small action, woven together, moves us closer to One Wild Future for Canada’s species and the places they call home.“
Wilder Voices: Calgary takes place Dec. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Wilder Institute’s Calgary Zoo — Safari Lodge. Tickets are on sale now at wilderinstitute.org
