Genuine Execution for Real Brands

As AI floods the internet with more content, Calgary’s JYZ Design is betting on something technology cannot replicate: the feeling of being present.

Artificial intelligence makes it possible to generate an endless stream of websites, images, campaigns and content in seconds, but Calgary-based creative agency JYZ Design is moving in the opposite direction. The female-founded team is focusing on the places, experiences and brands that cannot be reduced to a prompt.

A mountain resort at sunrise; a long table in a beautifully designed restaurant; the quiet ritual of entering a spa; a live event where strangers become a community — these are the experiences people travel for, gather around and remember.

“AI can generate more content, but it cannot replace what it feels like to be somewhere,” says JYZ Design founder Judy Hughes. “Our work is about creating that feeling, then translating it into a brand experience that makes someone want to experience it for themselves.”

Founded in Calgary in 2016, JYZ Design has grown into an agile creative agency specializing in hospitality, tourism and experience-driven brands. The agency offers services that range from web design and social media support to digital marketing and photography.

JYZ Design’s work spans hotels, resorts, spas, restaurants, wellness events and destinations, including recognizable names such as Kananaskis Nordic Spa, Pomeroy Kananaskis Mountain Lodge, Clique Hotels & Resorts, Explore Kananaskis and Vintage Group.

Real ideas

JYZ Design sees the rise of AI as a reason to become more selective in how brands market themselves, not less. When average content becomes faster and cheaper to produce, original thinking, emotional intelligence and exceptional execution become more valuable.

The team has a name for the flood of generic, interchangeable content filling digital platforms: AI slop — polished at first glance, but lacking tension, specificity and a real point of view. It is technically correct but emotionally forgettable, explains Hughes.

However, JYZ Design is not anti-AI. The agency uses it strategically to accelerate research, organize information, explore ideas and improve production efficiency. Technology remains a tool rather than the source of the idea — where real-life creativity, feeling and experience are invaluable.

The time JYZ saves through practical uses of AI is reinvested in the work that requires human judgment: understanding an audience, finding the emotional centre of a brand, directing a production, noticing an unexpected moment and shaping an experience around how people actually behave.

That philosophy is visible in the agency’s high-end campaign productions. Rather than relying solely on stock photography, computer-generated imagery or highly staged sets, JYZ creates photography and video featuring real people interacting with hospitality spaces as guests would.

The setting matters, but the human experience is what makes it aspirational.

Emotion-based interactions

JYZ Design approaches hospitality website design as more than a booking engine or an amenity list. Each interaction should move the visitor closer to a feeling: restoration, belonging or discovery.

The agency’s advantage also comes from the composition of its team. JYZ Design is female-founded and led by a young, multidisciplinary group that can move quickly between strategy, branding, photography, video, social media and web design. Hughes sees empathy as one of the agency’s sharpest business tools.

The JYZ team pays attention, walks through the experience from their perspective and asks the right questions. What creates consumer uncertainty? What makes someone hesitate? What details make them feel considered? What changes a nice experience into one they tell other people about?

For JYZ Design, the future belongs to brands that understand this distinction.

“The brands I’m most excited to work with give people a reason to put their phones down,” says Judy Hughes, founder of JYZ Design. “Somewhere in us, we know we’re meant to do more than scroll. We’re meant to move, taste, touch, explore and connect. Our job is to tell stories that make people crave an experience with all five senses, and the feeling that comes with it: being present, feeling connected and finally exhaling.”

As the volume of disposable content rises, the agency believes people will become more discerning and place greater value on originality, craft and real-world connection. JYZ Design believes premium brands will not win by producing the most content; they will win by creating something worth experiencing and something worth leaving home for.

That is where JYZ Design is placing its bet. In a world where technology can imitate almost anything, the agency is building brands around what cannot be faked: atmosphere, connection, escape and memory.

AI may help JYZ move faster, but humanity is what gives the work somewhere meaningful to go.
