Where to Rent Ice Skates in Calgary and the Rockies

Rental shops and used sports stores make it easy for anyone to enjoy this winter sport.

Even if you don’t have your own pair of skates to take to the rink or the pond, you can rent some (or find some secondhand) for a great price.

 

Where to rent ice skates in Calgary

The Pro Shop at Southland Leisure Centre

If you aren’t keen on skating outdoors, head to one of the many indoor skating rinks the city offers. Most indoor rinks have pro shops that offer skate rentals, although you will need to keep these rentals within the vicinity. Start with Southland Leisure Centre: hockey skates and figure skates are rented out here, as are helmets. Visit the Southland Leisure Centre Pro Shop for pricing.

Rapid Rent

For those who live in the south and don’t want to brave icy roads, look for skates at Rapid Rent. A variety of brands are available for rent here and skates can be used at any rink. Choose to rent skates for one day ($15) or up to seven days ($45). Package deals are also offered here.

Skate Hut at Olympic Plaza

Skate rentals are available in downtown Calgary, perfect if you’re planning on skating at the Olympic Plaza outdoor rink. This rental shop is located on the southwest corner of Olympic Plaza by Arts Commons and operates Thursdays through Sundays (check calgaryskaterentals.com for holiday hours). Children’s skates cost $8 for two hours and adult hockey and figure skates for $12 to rent for two hours. Skate Hut also rents helmets ($5 for two hours) and skating aids ($8 for two hours.) Skate sharpening services are also offered here.

Skate Shop at the Olympic Oval

Skating at the University of Calgary’s Olympic Oval is an incredible experience. It was built for the 1988 Olympics and it’s still used by Olympians and Olympic hopefuls. If you want to skate the 400-metre track, this venue offers rentals. Hockey and speed skates can be rented out for $6.50 for the whole day, but can only be used at the Olympic Oval. If you already have skates, helmets can be rented out for $2.50 — helmets are mandatory on this rink. Visit oval.ucalgary.ca for public skate times.

Sports Rent

For those who prefer to use hockey skates instead of figure skates, head down to Sports Rent. Rental for one day costs just $13. If you’re going to be playing in a tournament and need the skates longer, Sports Rent rents skates for seven days ($60) and more ($5 for each additional day). It’s also possible to rent hockey gear and goalie sets here.

University of Calgary Outdoor Centre

The U of C’s Outdoor Centre rents hockey skates for $10 per day. (And the Skate Shop at Bowness Park Lagoon is also operated by the University of Calgary Outdoor Centre.)

Where to rent skates in the Rockies

Banff Adventures Unlimited

If you’re in Banff for a weekend trip, don’t go home before you’ve skated on some of the lakes there. For $15 a day, Banff Adventures Unlimited rents skates that are in great condition. Also head here if you’re looking to rent helmets ($7 per day) or hockey sticks ($5 per day).

GearUp Mountain Sport and Rentals

Canmore is home to some great outdoor skating rinks. GearUp rents out skates for $14 per day. If you’ll be in Canmore for an extended holiday, you can choose to rent skates for one week for $83 with additional days costing $12. What’s great about this venue is that you can rent skates the night before at no extra cost. Family rental specials are also available here.

Wilson Mountain Sports

Lake Louise is a gorgeous location for some outdoor skating. If you don’t have your own, rent skates from Wilson Mountain Sports for just $12 per day. Rent hockey sticks at $6 each and start a game of shinny while you’re out on the ice.

Where to buy used skates

2nd Chance Sports

This store buys, sells and trades sports equipment for more than 15 different sports. That includes hockey skates and figure skates. And it’s just across the road from the Italian Super Market, so you can stop there for lunch.
