According to a City of Calgary Region Economic Outlook report, 108,400 more people are expected to move to Calgary by 2028, making it clear the city is contributing significantly to Alberta’s title as the fastest-growing province in the country. With how rapidly our spirited and lively city is growing, it’s safe to say that change is inevitable. But what that change and future will look like is a constantly evolving question.
At Avenue‘s 2024 Future of the City Festival, hear from those shaping the future of Calgary as we explore the city’s expansion, development and many areas of growth with local experts. Held at the City Building Design Lab on April 30th, the event will feature panel discussions, an exhibition about innovative design and more. Tickets are available online.
Here are just three reasons you should attend the 2024 festival.
Learn about innovative design
Throughout the event, guests can check out the annual Year End Show exhibition by students from the University of Calgary’s School of Architecture, Planning and Landscape. The exhibition features 3D models and renderings that tackle social or economic inequality, prompting citizens to consider more efficient and adaptive design for Calgary’s core.
Engage in thought-provoking and informative panel discussions on downtown Calgary and housing density
There will be two panel discussions during the festival. The first panel examines the future of downtown Calgary with panelists Maxim Olshevsky, CEO of Astra Group and Peoplefirst Developments; Darshan Tailor, Urban Planner with the City of Calgary; and Deeter Schurig, CEO of cSPACE.
The second panel discussion tackles housing density and why the issue affects us emotionally. Giving expert insight on this issue are panelists Latosia Campbell-Walters, owner of Sparks Planning Group; Dr. Teresa Goldstein, chair of the City planning commission; and Srimal Ranasinghe, managing partner of Hive Developments.
Network with other passionate Calgarians
One of the biggest perks of this festival is the opportunity to network with other Calgarians who are enthusiastic about Calgary’s future. This is your chance to exchange ideas, ask questions, learn more about the city’s future goals and find out how you can contribute to them.
Tickets are available online for the Future of the City Festival on April 30, 2024.
