The history

In 1905, architect William Stanley Bates built what would become known as the Sayre Estate. Bates was a talented architect who emigrated from Yorkshire, England to Calgary in 1904. Bates formed a partnership with James L. Wilson and Gilbert Hodgson, and together their talents were sought after by several notable Calgarians, including Patrick Burns, Senator James L. Lougheed and Judson Sayre. The Sayre home is distinguished with a sandstone foundation, Cochrane brick and half-timbered details. The deep front yard and Coach House are also typical features of estate lots from its period.

What to love

Nestled across an acre of land in the heart of Calgary and the prestigious Upper Mount Royal community, this home balances historic and modern appeal. Over the years, the home has been carefully maintained and updated while still protecting its historic aspects. Inside, a grand staircase, coffered ceilings, oak hardwood floors and luxurious finishings are features throughout the home.

While guests could stay in one of the spacious bedrooms inside the home, there is also a separate, 676-square-foot Coach House that offers two bedrooms, a full kitchen, a bathroom, a living room and a heated double garage below it. Outside, a regulation-size tennis court, large deck, stylish landscaping and yard space offer plenty of outdoor enjoyment during the summer.

With ample indoor and outdoor space, this home is ideal for large or growing families, or homeowners who love entertaining large groups. Steeped in local history and located less than 10 minutes from the heart of downtown, the location of this home also adds major appeal with easy access to shopping, dining and recreational amenities.
