In 2019, Chris and Karen Fodor opened City & Country, a local winery and tasting room that makes its own wine in Calgary.

While Alberta may not be as known for its grape or wine production as Canadian provinces like B.C. or Ontario, City & Country is proof that great wine can be made right here. The Fodors import grapes from all over the world to make a wide variety of wines.

“What’s neat is we can buy grapes from places like California or Oregon in October or buy grapes from the southern hemisphere in South Africa in April or May. So we’re able to spread out our wine-making process throughout the year and pick the best grapes with developed flavours,” says Chris.

Each artisanal wine is made without added flavours, colours or sugars. Made in small batches, the vegan and gluten-free wines offer a fruit-forward taste that celebrates the grapes’ clean flavour.

Each variety of red, white and rosé wine is uniquely aged and fermented to bring out the wine’s best notes and aromas. Popular bottles like the 2020 Okangagan Rosé feature fruity, floral notes with hints of spice, while festive flavours like the seasonal mulled wine offer tastes of cinnamon, orange peel and star anise.
