Now that the weather is warming up, two Calgary restaurants located in picturesque local parks have come up with a creative way to enjoy their food outdoors. Both River Café and Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant are currently offering takeaway picnics that you can dig into in Prince’s Island Park or Fish Creek Provincial Park, respectively. It’s a great way to support local restaurants while getting outside with your household or two close contacts if you live alone.

At River Café, you can select from a variety of dishes ranging from roast beef sandwiches to bison bolognese cavatelli for your picnic, or opt for the set menu in the premium basket for two ($139) or picnic for two ($55). There’s also a kid-friendly menu. The picnic comes with your own compostable utensils and a compostable bag to carry it in. Add-ons like blankets and baskets are also available for purchase.

Bow Valley Ranche Restaurant’s picnic baskets are available Thursday to Sunday from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. The picnic baskets feature a set menu of sandwiches, charcuterie, crudités and desserts, plus you can add beverages for an extra fee. All picnics come with a basket, blanket and tableware, which has to be returned when you’re finished. While Fish Creek Provincial Park is a great picnic spot, the restaurant will deliver a basket up to 25 km away for an extra fee and will pick it up afterwards for $12 if you’re within 15 km.
