Whether you spell it perogy or pyrohy or you get them from a Ukrainian or Russian deli, it’s all delicious. If you can’t convince your Baba to make it, here’s where to get your fix of these and other authentic, comfort-filled Ukrainian food.

Heritage Bakery & Deli

This primarily Ukrainian deli has been around since 1985. It sells 10 different kinds of savoury and sweet perogies as well as some lesser known items such as nalysnyky (cottage cheese crepes) and white borscht made with garlic sausage, potatoes and hard-boiled eggs. Go for the huge breakfast plate with perogies, garlic sausage, a potato pancake and eggs for just $8.95.

Kalinka Food Store

Go for lunch or dinner at this Ukrainian deli and European food market located in the community of Fairview. The menu includes classic hot borscht, cabbage rolls and sausage with sauerkraut. The market also has a nice selection of sweet Ukrainian treats such as hazelnutty Kiev cake and sweet honey cake.

Matrioshka Russian Delicatessen

You might just miss this small store around the corner from 17th Avenue S.W. if not for the sandwich board outside advertising delicious cabbage rolls. It’s a Russian store, but you can get some seriously good bang for your buck here with bags of two-dozen perogies for $10 or less and a large bag of cabbage rolls for $3.95. The cherry dessert perogies are a favourite.

Perogy Boyz

Hunt down the Perogy Boyz food truck year-round for a modern twist on everyone’s favourite Ukrainian dish. You can top eight potato-and-cheddar perogies with everything from classic onions and bacon to jalapeo cheese or maple syrup with berries. Find the truck’s location on Facebook or Twitter.
